Belmont Abbey College, more commonly referred to as simply the Abbey, BAC or Belmont, is a private liberal-arts Benedictine/Catholic college located in Belmont, which is a city in Gaston County, in the US state of North Carolina, situated approximately 15 miles west of uptown Charlotte, with a population estimated at a number of nearly 9000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census.
Belmont was established in April, 1876, by the Benedictine monks of Belmont Abbey, and currently offers undergraduate educational programs for students of all ethnicities, cultures or religious backgrounds.
The most prominent building on campus is The Abbey Church, which was completed in 1894, under the supervision of Abbot Leo Haid. It is a magnificent architectural structure built in a gothic-revival style out of brick and granite, in the shape of a Latin cross. The Abbey Church was named by Pope John Paul II, in 1998, a minor basilica in recognition of the historical and aesthetical significance of the structure. The students from Belmont Abbey College have a tradition - licking the raven on the statue of St. Benedict in front of the basilica ensures luck for the entire academic year.
BAC's athletic teams are known as the Crusaders, which participate in NCAA's Division II, as members of the Conference Carolinas, in several sports, for men and women, including golf, tennis and track and field. Their distinctive colors are crimson and cream.
The list of notable alumni from the Abbey contains names such as: Patrick McHenry - U.S. Representative from North Carolina, Tony Suarez - Professional Soccer player for Carolina Lightnin', Nikki Hornsby - Grammy voting singer songwriter guitarist recording artist & CEO of CJP-NHRecords, Inc., and Patti Wheeler - President and Owner of Wheeler Television Inc., among few others.
